Paani Eco

Creating Sustainable
Rural Livelihoods

Paani Eco LLP is a company set up by the team at Paani Foundation with the mission to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for farmers and their families in rural Maharashtra. We aim to train farmers, and especially women, on livelihoods that can boost their incomes, and run with a low carbon footprint. We also believe that this initiative has the potential to reduce distress migration and boost the rural economy.

Currently, we are associated with over 900 villages in Maharashtra. We hope that in the months to come, our training can enable farming families to move up the agricultural value chain by becoming small business owners.

Our Background

From 2016 to 2019, Paani Foundation mobilised and trained over 6,000 villages in Maharashtra with the social and technical skills to fight the crisis of drought. These villages then participated in the Satyamev Jayate Water Cup, a competition to do the best work in soil and water conservation. Over 4 years, their unity and hard work created over 550 billion litres of water storage capacity, and transformed the landscape of large parts of rural Maharashtra. The competition became a strong symbol of success and hope.

In 2020, in order to build on this success and social unity, Paani Foundation launched a new competition, the Satyamev Jayate Samruddha Gaon Spardha. This is an ongoing competition, in which over 900 villages – the most consistent performers of the Water Cup – are taking part. With the Spardha, Paani Foundation’s mission is to boost the rural economy and ecology of the state. Currently, the participating villages are being trained to go beyond water conservation, and work unitedly on sustainable practices for agriculture and water management , as well as environmental conservation and restoration.

Our Role

Paani Eco plays a crucial role in enabling villages participating in the Spardha to achieve economic prosperity. Currently, we are incubating sustainable livelihood opportunities for rural families, and strategizing on connecting villages with markets. In the months to come, our hope is to train villages to make value-added products from existing crops and local resources, and support them in finding assured buyers.

The struggle to save the planet and ecosystems from environmental degradation will require long term effort and will require channelising the energy and enthusiasm of youth. Paani Eco has therefore designed workshops to inspire students and corporates to be ambassadors for the environment. The first initiative to be launched is ‘Paani Eco’s Planeteers Workshop’, an exciting digital workshop for students. We will continue updating our website with more information, and look forward to having you on this journey with us.
